Planet Earth Hits Back

 

The planet woke one morning
And didn’t feel too good
Suddenly it was dawning
It’s not working as it should
I lease my world to beings
And give them a free hand
They are just not seeing
They do not understand
My friend Old Sol supplies each day
All the energy they need
Still they have to find a way
To satisfy their greed
They use all my resources
It’s really quite obscene
Abusing nature’s forces
Yet claiming to be “green"
Some clever ones use phrases
Want their voices to be heard
The logic can be lazy
The catchphrases absurd.

 

Let’s back up dear old carbon
After all it’s everywhere
Yet now is cast as villain
Sinner beyond compare
Carbon cannot figure out
What causes so much strife
Its complex structures all about
Are responsible for life
Human ingenuity found a clever way
With Inventions quite fantastic
Carbon has an essential role to play
As component of every plastic
So they use some plastic

Then throw it all away

To waste disposal then it’s sent
Not used another way
CH4 and CO2 castigated sinners
They are nothing of the sort
They’re products of our inners
Part of vital life support

 

 

Excess production all around
Mass consumption so to please
New solutions must be found
And not just chop down trees
What they will not fathom
Because it leaves a nasty taste
Foods and goods made for them
Don’t need to go to waste
I think I’ll send a warning
They are on a slippery slope
They will not see it coming
Let’s see how they will cope
This virus will originate
From somewhere unhygienic
Then when it is too late
It will become complete pandemic
Some will take advantage
And increase their own vast wealth
Others get the message
To improve the whole Earth’s health

 

By working hell for leather
And changing their ghastly ways
Bringing all earth together
To enjoy much better days
The lesson will be hard to bear
And cause tremendous grief
Time is needed to repair
And bring my world relief
I have been observing
It behoves me to confess
This lot have been serving
A complete and utter mess
My purpose is to give notice
My aim not to condemn
But advocate the issue is
Not carbon but with them
This essential operation
Requires no surgeon’s knife
But global cooperation
For a brand-new lease of life
